okay. well i am normallyi a brass, and string player. i have pretty much no experience with woodwinds. EXCEPT. last year in band i borrowed an oboe from the school. went out to the local music store, paid twelve bucks for one frickin reed, and then. uh. broke it in like two hours of playing. i could get a sound, a very soft sound but a goose like sound but yeah. okay so anyway. i play french horn currently after a switched from the trumpet to it. i am a very experienced band player and play varieties of instruments such as the guitar and pennywhistle and such bbut yeah, okay, i watned to switch to the alto clarinet since it is such a unique instrument, but then again i was recommended to start on the clarinet. any alto clarinet players out there? is it hard instrument or ... cuase we just had a flute switch to a bass clarinet. WHOA. yeah. soo best answer i will choose asap
How is the alto clarinet different from the B flat clarinet?
I recently got an alto clarinet after having a B flat for years. Can i read notes and finger the same as i do on the B flat? ex. when i finger a B flat note, like a C, what note will come out of the alto?

I've been playin soprano for roughly three years and thought 'bout transitioning to the ALTO CLARINET. when transitioning mouthpieces is there a huge difference gripping the mouthpiece compared to the soprano? is it a little more complex then slightly roll the bottom lip, open mouth and put piece in, and close and bite the top of the mouthpiece? i know its a bigger mouthpiece and would like to find out how much you have to change your grip position of the mouthpiece to properly play an alto

I am composing for a small ensemble comprising of a clarinet, bass alto clarinet and flute. The computer program I'm using Sibelius has the following options for each instrument and I am unsure of which one to use so that the musician can actually play what I have intended...For Clarinet 1. Clarinet in Ab2. Clarinet in G3. Clarinet in Eb4. Clarinet in D5. Clarinet in C6. Clarinet in Bb7. Clarinet in AFor Bass Alto Clarinet 1. Alto Clarinet in Eb2. Alto Clarinet in Eb bass clef, treble transp. 3. Bass Clarinet in Bb4. Bass Clarinet in Bb bass clef, treble transp. For Flute 1. G Flute2. Eb Flute3. Flute4. Alto Flute5. Bass FluteI am not seeing the musicians before I am supposed to have this score to them so am unable to ask them directly. I assume that they would have the most common normal of each instrument... Contra Alto Clarinet Help?
I was just wondering if anyone can help me to convert tuba music to contra alto clarinet form. Since there are not really any contra alto parts out there I usually have to use the bari sax part, but my band director said there is a way to change to tuba music to contra alto music. Any help?
What is so bad about the Alto Clarinet?
Im Currently playing Alto clarinet, it has been almost a year now. And im still playing 1st clarinet grade 4 music. Now the thing that ticks me off is i heard the alto clarinet has a unusual sound and sounds off? I think it's bull...I have played some solo's on the alto and it sounded beautiful. The only problem though is the B flat is disgusting but other than that i love it to death. I want to be a full time alto clarinetist but i don't think thats going to happen, because not many composers write music for the alto clarinet. My band teacher tries to find songs for all instruments including alto clarinet. Why is this instrument extinct to orchestras or even most wind bands. IQuote " Since at least the late 1940s, there has been discussion over whether the alto clarinet could or should be eliminated from the standard wind band. The arguments usually used include its relatively low volume, unremarkable tone, and fact that its part is nearly always doubled by other instruments, and the expense. Many junior high school and high school bands have ceased using the instrument for these reasons."
