Just read. WARNING kinda long. Okay, I have been playing bassoon for three years now and I'm pretty good at it First Chair Texas All State Orchestra but then I realize I'm just gonna play cello parts for the rest of my life... Have you ever wonder " Wow, I wonder if I'll ever have any solos?" The only solo I ever played was the Grandpa excerpt from Peter And the Wolf which I don't really like at a charity event. I know the bassoon isn't as flashy as the flute or violin but considering the moderate difficulty of the instrument we deserve some show. And we all know that you'll get some scholarship especially for double reeds, but you really NEED to be a good at it which quite frankly, I'm a bit lazy now. Should I switch to a instrument like Bb Clarinet? or Trombone? I love the sound of the harp and I can read Treble Clef quite fine actually. I know my band director is gonna bash me if I ever asked to switch instruments. Maybe I just feel a little bored at the bassoon. Can someone remind me how awesome the bassoon is?I just asked this question here for your opinions.
I want to play the bassoon?
I play the baritone horn and its getting a bit tiresome. I am in middle school and a kid who tried the bassoon stopped because the reeds were to expensive. I want to try something difficult and I really like the sound of the bassoon. Also I am in the jazz band, is bassoon a jazz instrument? Please help because I'm really not sure if I should try it or not ? ?

For school, me and two of my friends want to do a trio on our instruments. Two of us play clarinet and one of us plays flute. The only instrument pieces of music I can find are for bassoon, clarinet and flute. So can we substitute one clarinet for a bassoon? Also, any suggestions for music? Thanks

Tenor Saxophone vs. Bassoon?
I've been playing the alto saxophone for four years now, and recently, we had try outs for varsity and junior varsity band. Long story short, I didn't make it. My band director told me it wasn't the playing that was the problem, but we have so many altos that it was pretty much blind guessing. I asked her about switching to the tenor saxophone since we only have about five opposed to the twenty altos and she recommended the bassoon. The school will not provide the tenor sax if I play it, but the bassoon will come with lessons and the instrument itself. I like the idea of playing the tenor since the fingerings are very similar to the alto, but the bassoon would almost guarantee a spot in JV or Varsity next year since there's only one bassoonist. Of course, transferring to the tenor from the alto will be almost painless, but the bassoon seems like it wouldn't be hard. Can anyone give thoughts or comments?
Bassoon reed cleaning?
Every week or two, after practicing, I clean my bassoon reeds by spraying them with a mixture of Listerine mouthwash and water. Is this bad?
