theres this whole debate going on in band about which one is hardest. i understand that bot are very difficult to learn but im sure that there is some factor which would lead to one being harder than the other. facts, opinion, and experience please thanks
Should I choose oboe or bassoon?
I have stopped learning the cello in the favour of a more portable instrument. My music teacher suggested oboe or bassoon as they are less common and there aren't many at my school. The pros for oboe are that it's cheaper than the bassoon although I will be renting it from the school and it is also more portable it won't be a hassle to carry for a half hour walk. The con's are that I have heard you need a lot of breath power for the oboe which I can't say I have much of. Will I gain this from learning? The pro's for bassoon are the reeds last longer they burn longer ahahahaha and I do like the variety of sounds. The con's are the price and the bigger weight to carry. So which should I choose?
Is it too late to learn oboe in 9th grade?
I wanna learn oboe next year, i've had 2 years of experience on the clarinet and i've had half a year on violin and have musical experience, especially in music theory, and i want to joing my school's symphony but the teacher told me they only accept the best, could i be good enough by 11th grade?

I play oboe in middle school.I buy store bought reeds.my oboe reeds will split down the middle after about a week or two. they always break at the worst time,for example today I had a playing test and my reed broke so I could not play also I have a tryout for all county band. why do they keep breaking? And how do i stop them from breaking like that?
I need advice on how to convince my parents to buy me an oboe!?
So i'm 13, in 8th grade going into 9th soon, as school's almost out and i've been playing the clarinet for two years now, and it's gotten so easy to play, it's boring. I've recently been thinking about playing the oboe, so i asked my band teacher and she said that i'd be a GREAT oboe player. The only thing standing in my way is the price tag. We're about to move this summer and thats when i wanted to learn it, but my parents say it's too expensive i've even offered to get a used one . I need some help of what to say i've mentioned the scholarships
Will a broken oboe reed prevent playing it?
I recently started to learn the oboe a week ago, and the reeds i have been using have now got chips in them, small and along the top edge. Will this affect the way it can be played future or are they still useable? It would be very inconvenient to have to get new ones, as they are quite expensive and hard to get where i live.
Can I change the pads on my oboe myself?
ok..so I brought an oboe off ebay and took it to the music shop for a service and they've told me all the pads need to be replaced before the service is done, which will cost 240 vat I'm a student so don't have that much money, so was wondering if it's something I can do myself for an awful lot less money?

when i got my oboe i did not get a cleaning cloth. i borrowed one from a friend, i know for a fact that the one i have will not go through the top part.Another oboe player got the same type of cloth stuck in the top part,took a long time to fix,she had to borrow the only really bad oboe during that time.I did not even know we had a school oboe. i have never cleaned the top part and rarely clean it anyways. Should i clean it? If so what do i buy for the top part? i've heard people talk about feathers?

hey, I recently started playing oboe, and im doing pretty good so far. But yesterday, the cork came if of the bell part of my oboe, the part where you comnect the bell with the rest of the instrument. I didint think it was that big of a deal, until I practiced today, and my oboe sounded messed up, no matter I positioned the reed, and my teacher said I had a good reed, so im sure thats not the problem. should I tell my band director and have the cork replaced? or is it not important? thanks oh btw I cant get low c out today, but I always can, and when I played b flat, it made this weird noise that it never made before
