How to notate "spiccato" on string instruments?
I want the hollywood pirates of the caribbean sound where they repeatedly play short, accented notes in a pattern. Spiccato seems to be the one. Is this thing on the left en.wikipedia.org wiki File Spiccato %28muzyka %29.png correct? I have scoured the internet and wikipedia is the only site that claims that spiccato is represented thus. Most people say to just say " spic"

How often do string instruments (violin, viola, cello) play 2-3 string chords?
I'm arranging songs for a musical I'm writing but I know nothing about string instruments besides that they have 4 strings, their range, and that they can play chords in 4th, 5th, and 6th intervals. At least, that's what my viola playing friend said would be the easiest chords to play. PLEASE give a detailed answer, that would be great I absolutely LOVE the sound of string instruments, so if you can give me as much extra info about arranging with string instruments as you can, that would be great, too Thanks Right now I have at least one chord for every instrument in every song, so I'm wondering if it's too much...

How do you learn to play fretless string instruments?
How do you learn to play the violin, chello, and so on.. ?I'm not intending to learn to play these instruments, i'm learning to play the guitar using online lessons. But the violin has no frets to indicate where you should press the string with the finger to make the right note. How is it possible to learn to play these instruments? I'm very curious

Why don't orchestral string instruments have frets?

Gliga string instruments.?
So I'm getting a Gliga Gama Viola this summer but I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of them or had any experience with any of the instruments

The history of the string instruments?

Questions about string instruments...?
HiI have a basic idea for a strings piece with a cello and a violin only but I dont really know stringed instruments at all since I don't play any, I play the piano. SO here's the thing What are the ranges for normal violins and cellos? A friend told me a violin would be G3 to about E6, and said I really shouldn't go above E6 even though it can be done. ??? Explain what he meant plz? What about the cello? Also, I know these instruments cannot play more than a single note at a time, except for some exceptions Usually at the end of a piece, they do some chords by using multiple strings at a time , what kind of chords can you do with this technique? And finally, what other limitations do these instruments imply? Like, can you ask a violinist to play a tremolo with a note and the same one but on a higher octave or will the violinist break a finger or two trying to do it?

Who's an artist/group that focuses on piano and string instruments?
I've recently fallen in love with Vitamin String Quartet and Yiruma, and if there was a group who combined both string and piano I'd be over the moon. Anyone know of such a thing? I'd like to stay away from brass, most of it is a bit jarring for me. No jazz either. And vocal is okay, but I'd rather it be purely instrumental. Thanks in advance

Science of string instruments?
So, you pluck or bow a string on a guitar or violin.I understand that the vibrations of the string create sound. I know they have sound holes like the hole of an acoustic guitar. So do soundwaves travel into that hole, and then echo all around within the instrument's body? If that's the case, what part does the shape of the instrument play?

What string instrument should I get?
I have been playing bass guitar for roughly 4 years now. I love all string instruments. Lately I found string quartet music of bands I love. I really would love to learn and play one. I heard orchestra string instruments are a lot more difficult to fret. So i'm not to sure if I would enjoy it as much as bass. Also I'm not sure what to get a viola, violin, or cello. I would get a double bass but I don't have to much money to buy one. Also if you have any recommendations of a certain instrument look to see if its on interstatemusic.com if you could or find something in the range of what you had in mind.O yea this is not a general music store. They have very good teachers so I will probably ask them there too.
