What makes a stringed instrument out of tune and in tune?
Say you tune your instrument. It later gets out of tune. Why is that? Then you have to tune it again. How does turning these things make your instrument in tune?

BASICALLY... I have to make a resource, as part of my course, on world music. I'm currently looking at Gadulka's or Balkan Fiddle's.I have this piece of infomation " The bridge, placed between the two roughly " D" shaped sound holes, has one foot placed on the top, while the other foot rests on top of the sound post." And I basically have to be able to word it and explain it so someone who isn't musical will understand.I play woodwind and piano, so don't know much about string instruments.I know what sound holes and a sound post is, but what does it mean when it refers to the " foot" ?HELP?

I was wondering what stringed instrument that isn't classical i.e. double bass, viola, violin, and cello is most closely related to the cello. I seemed to think that it was an electric bass, but the people I was talking to said that it was a guitar. Does anyone have any incite? I really want to know.

Im in college now and play ukulele. As anyone whose stayed in a dorm knows, the walls arent soundproof. Im trying to play the ukulele, but to play it silently, or by making as little noise as possible. I was wondering if anyone has any techniques that have worked for them in these types of situations. Hey I really need some stringed instrument suggestions. Preferably I want to play a slightly obscure ethnic stringed instrument, that's not too hard to play. Would the lute be too hard? Balalaika? Bouzouki? easy ethinc stringed instrument thnx ok i reaaally didn't mean to offend so many of you i HAVE fallen in love with the sound of the lute, and i really really want to play it. But my dad says i should try find something else similar, because he thinks its too hard. Plus it's really hard to find a teacher in my country, New Zealand. but after what you guys have said i think i'll just ignore him and keep going with the instrument i love as best i can. sorry again for pissing so many of you off
